Core Competency #4: Understanding the University Context

*This core competency is satisfied by participating in a professional development workshop or seminar, such as those offered by the Graduate School, your college or department, another unit on-campus or an organization or off-campus

Description of Core Competency

The fourth competency can be expressed through a person’s working knowledge about his or her right(s), role(s), and responsibility(ies) as an educator in a university or college setting. In order to master this competency, a person should be aware of the political climate in his or her chosen area of study and confident in his or her approach to teaching and conducting research. This competency can also be mastered by knowing one’s limits as a developing educator and, as a result, by being selective about determining where and for whom to teach.

Relevant topics to this area of competency include: right(s), role(s), and responsibility(ies); professional development; approaches to teaching and research; and, program development.
